Take Action: NY Times Omits Factory Farm Culpability from Bird Flu Coverage

In an in-depth story about bird flu killing elephant seals, the NY Times makes no mention of the origin of the virus. When wild birds transmit a mild strain of the virus to domesticated birds in factory farms, the virus spreads quickly among the crowded animals and mutates into strains that are deadly and spill back into wild animals. The public needs to know that humans created this infectious disease by intensively confining animals. In a story about a fire that killed 6,000 pigs in a factory farm, the NY Times fails to acknowledge that the animals were victims of cruelty from birth until death.
